Stayfast, 13-15 West Street
Mike, shop manager for Stayfast, worked in the business in Old Market for over 23 years, and sent us the loveable account below. We were impressed by an old lift in the building and we are keen of discovering more about its misteries…
“Our premises were once the location of the old Lamb Inn which dated from 1631 and was rebuilt at the turn of the century. As reported in the local press tales of witch craft have been associated with the Inn and it was here too that the great imposter James Naylor slept when he visited Bristol in 1856. Naylor impersonated the saviour and had numerous following; He was whipped from Westminster to the old Exchange and had his tongue bored with a hot iron.
We have also been mentioned in the book Haunted Bristol which also has tales of ghost and odd happenings.
In my many years working here often late into the night I have had many eerie happenings and strange sounds, many from the basement which still has the original flagstone from the Old Lamb Inn.
